Whitchurch Silk Mill is the oldest silk mill still in operation in the UK. Built in 1816, the mill passed through several hands of ownership before being rescued and restored by Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust and opened as a working museum in 1990. The Mill operates under the management of Whitchurch Silk Mill Trust, to ensure the survival of weaving using traditional machinery and methods and preserve the craft of silk weaving passed down through generations.
The Mill is open throughout the year and there's plenty to see and do. See original examples of Victorian Machinery and learn about the weaving process, view the original mill wheel in action and take in the lovely gardens and stunning River Test. Follow this with tea and cake at the Riverside Cafe.
